How do we organise our family’s finances in one place?
Make one list of everything the household owns and owes, in one currency, with whose each item is; agree what you spend and aim for; keep it current; and keep the legal papers beside it.
Start with one list. A family’s money is usually spread across banks, brokers, workplace schemes, property and sometimes countries, and the most common problem is not a bad investment but nobody being able to see the whole. Wealthy families pay a family office to keep that picture for them; the thinking behind it — one balance sheet, one owner for each item, reviewed on a timetable — costs nothing to copy.
Five steps
- List everything you own. Bank and fixed deposits, investments, pension and savings schemes, property, gold, and any money you expect to receive. For each: where it is held, whose name it is in, and roughly what it is worth.
- List everything you owe. Each loan with its outstanding balance, payment and end date.
- Put it in one currency. If money sits in several countries, convert it all into the currency you will spend it in, so the total means something.
- Agree the spending and the goals. One figure for what the household spends, and the costs ahead — education, a home, a wedding — with their years.
- Keep it current. Review it on a fixed date, once or twice a year, and whenever something large changes.
Keep the papers beside the list
- Nominations and beneficiary designations on every account that allows them. Some accounts pass by nomination outside a will, so an outdated one can override what you intended.
- A will, so your money and possessions go where you mean them to.
- A power of attorney or its equivalent where you live, so someone you trust can act for you if you cannot.
- Logins kept safely, for example in a password manager rather than a document anybody could open.
Doing it in Nivritee
Nivritee is built to be that one place. Add holdings, deposits, schemes, property and loans under Investments and Liabilities, each in its own currency; the Portfolio Tracker adds them up in your plan’s currency, and Family Finance lets your partner see and keep their side with their own login. It holds no documents or passwords — those stay with the papers above.
See this in your own plan.
