What is the FIRE Planner?

Nivritee’s FIRE calculator and planner: your FI number, a 0–100 financial freedom index, how you compare with households like yours, stress tests, and the age you are projected to be able to stop.

The FIRE Planner is Nivritee’s FIRE calculator and planner. FIRE — financial independence, retire early — is the idea of saving and investing until what you hold can pay for your life without a salary, so that work becomes a choice. The FIRE Planner works out what that means for your household: how much you need, when you could get there, and how sturdy the answer is.

What it tells you

  • Your FI number — The number you are aiming at, in today’s money, priced on the life you plan to live after you stop. See what your FI number is.
  • Independent by — the earliest age at which your projection lasts to the end of your plan. See how early you could stop working.
  • The financial freedom index — a score out of 100 with its zone, built from how far along you are, how fast you are moving and how sturdy the plan is.
  • Where you stand — your household against households of your age in the country you will live in, from that country’s official survey.
  • Stress tests — named events such as a 2008-style crash or a sustained inflation shock, ticked together into one line beside your plan.
  • The ledger — every year of the projection, from your age today to the end of your plan.

  • Progress 50% of the score 21What you have, against the number this plan says you need.
  • Trajectory 30% of the score 100The age the projection actually reaches independence at.
  • Resilience 20% of the score 50Emergency cover and how much debt you are carrying.

An illustrative household. Your own score is computed from your plan and stored, not estimated.

The financial freedom index as the site draws it for the illustrative household: the score, its zone, and the three parts it is built from.

Illustrative figures — not anybody’s real plan.

How it differs from a simple FIRE calculator

  • It uses what you actually hold. Listed investments are priced every weekday and feed the projection directly; nothing is retyped.
  • Each cost rises at its own rate. Health at medical inflation, school fees at education inflation, the rest at general inflation — at the rates of the country you will be living in.
  • It plans for a couple. Two people can stop working at different ages, and each sees their own view as well as the family’s.
  • It plans for a move. Earn in one country, settle in another; a cost in another of the eleven markets rises at that country’s rates until it ends, and anywhere else at your plan’s.
  • It does not guess. No random simulations: the same inputs always give the same result, and the stress tests show the downside instead.

It needs a free account and about two minutes: the quick start asks for a country and seven figures. Open it from the menu as FIRE Planner, or with Open the FIRE Planner on the Overview.
