What does financial independence mean in Nivritee?

Having enough that your savings, plus any income that keeps paying, cover what you spend to the end of your plan — without needing to work. Nivritee measures it two ways.

You are financially independent when what you have saved, plus any income that keeps paying without you working — rent, a pension — is projected to cover what you spend for the rest of your plan. Nivritee measures that in two ways: whether your money lasts to the age you plan to, and how much you need to have to make that true.

Does it last? The verdict

The projection runs every year from today to your Plan until age. The verdict word — Critical, Short, Tight, Workable, Comfortable or Ample — says whether your savings are projected to last that long, and with how much room.

How much is enough? Your FI Number

On the Retirement Tracker, the financial freedom index shows The number you are aiming at: what you need to have to be independent. It is priced on the life you plan to live after you stop — not today’s spending — and it includes your life goals and any loan payments still running, minus income that keeps paying after you stop.

Two ages, and they are different

  • Age you stop earning is a choice you type in.
  • The age you are projected to reach independence is worked out: your real projection is run at different stopping ages to find the earliest one at which your money still lasts to the end of your plan.

Freedom Ladder

Cumulative, not four separate pots: everything you hold counts toward the rung it reaches and toward every rung above it. Illustrative figures, for one household.

The Freedom Ladder: one bar with three rungs and a fill for what the household holds today. The top of Sufficiency is the FI Number.

  • Survival and Sustenance — full.
  • Sufficiency — partly filled. When it is full, the ladder has reached your FI Number.
  • Surplus — whatever sits beyond independence.

Illustrative figures — not anybody’s real plan.
