How accurate is my plan?

As accurate as its inputs and assumptions. Plan confidence shows how much rests on your own figures; the stress tests show how much the answer moves when things go wrong.

A projection is exactly as good as two things: the figures you give it and the assumptions it runs on. The arithmetic itself is the same every time — the same inputs always give the same result, with no rounding inside the calculation. So the useful question is how much of your plan is yours, and how sensitive it is to the assumptions. Nivritee answers both.

How much of it is yours

The card How complete this plan is, on the Overview, gives a percentage and a word: Outline below 50, Taking shape from 50, Detailed from 80. It measures only whether you have given a figure, never whether the figure is good — and it is not a probability that the plan holds. That is what the verdict word is for.

How complete this plan is

70% Taking shape

Not a probability — that is what the outcome word answers. This is how much of the projection rests on figures you gave us rather than on a country default.

  • Your ages and where you will be living
  • What you spend, category by category
  • What you have saved
  • What you earn
  • Which savings are your emergency buffer
  • Whether each property is your home

The unanswered ones are the list of what would sharpen it.

The site’s drawing of the plan-confidence card for its illustrative household: 70%, Taking shape.

  • The score and its band word.
  • The note that it is not a probability.
  • The items still open — the list of what would sharpen it.

Illustrative figures — not anybody’s real plan.

How sensitive it is

  • The two return assumptions are exactly that. The return while you work and the return after you stop cannot be known in advance, so they are assumptions and cannot be anything else. Try changing them under You & your assumptions to see how much your answer moves.
  • The stress tests show the downside. A 2008-style crash, an inflation shock or a longer life, applied to your own plan on the Retirement Tracker.
  • Your verdict word already allows for a cushion. A plan that only just lasts reads Tight or Workable, not Comfortable.

Keeping it accurate over time

  • Your ages move on by themselves, so the projection always starts from today.
  • Listed holdings are priced every weekday; you do not need to update them.
  • Balances you typed are not grown for you. After a year without an edit, the plan asks you to check they are still right.

Known limits

Tax, state pension rules and a few other things are not modelled, and each has a simple way to allow for it. See what Nivritee does not model.
