Why does a rung say my money is in the wrong place?
Each rung only counts money that can do its job. When your total covers a rung but too little of it suits that rung, the card says the money is there and names how much is usable.
Because the ladder makes two separate readings. Coverage asks whether you have enough money for a rung. Instrument fit asks whether it is in something that rung can actually use. If you hold enough in total but too little of it suits the rung, the card says The money is there. Only … of it is in something this rung can use., and the funding word is made worse to match.
The four rungs
| Rung | Protects against | Held as |
|---|---|---|
| Survival | A shock that will not wait | Cash you can reach the same day |
| Sustenance | Income stopping | A laddered runway, no growth assets |
| Sufficiency | The number itself | One equity-to-debt decision |
| Surplus | What comes after | Whatever you choose it to be |
Each rung has its own purpose, its own target formula and its own instrument mix. They are not four versions of one allocation model.
The “Held as” column is the point: cash you can reach the same day for Survival, a runway with no growth assets for Sustenance, and one equity-to-debt decision for Sufficiency.
Illustrative figures — not anybody’s real plan.
What each rung can use
| Rung | Counts | Does not count |
|---|---|---|
| Survival | Cash and deposits | Everything else |
| Sustenance | Cash and deposits; bonds and debt funds; up to four fifths of gold | Equities, statutory schemes, property, other |
| Sufficiency | Everything you hold | The home you live in |
| Surplus | Everything you hold | The home you live in |
Your money is placed on the rungs starting with the most liquid — cash, then bonds and debt, then gold, equities, schemes, property and other — so the least liquid money is left where it is. The table is Nivritee’s own judgement of what each rung can use, stated as a judgement rather than presented as research.
What changes on the card
- The sentence under the figures states the share that fits, and the card repeats it in its own line.
- The word can only get worse because of fit, never better — and never as far as Nothing here yet, because you do have the money.
- What is in this rung lists each row placed there. On Sufficiency, cash, gold and anything filed as other are marked not what this rung wants.
- For Sustenance, What stands out may add Some of this is a restructuring, not a shortfall, with the amount that sits in the wrong place.
See this in your own plan.
