Why is my return shown without a colour?

Under a year of holding, an annualised return can swing wildly, so Nivritee shows the figure but withholds the green, amber or red until a full year is behind it.

Because your earliest priced holding has been held for less than a year. A return annualised from a few weeks or months can read wildly high or low, so Nivritee shows the figure — withholding it would tell you nothing — but leaves it uncoloured until a full year is behind it. The figure is a fact; the colour would be a verdict, and a rate this young is not yet a verdict on anything.

An illustrative household: Two adults, 38 and 36, two children, earning in Dubai and settling in Pune. Returns are XIRR on priced holdings; typed figures are counted but carry no return.

The headline after more than four years of holding: the rate, the plan’s assumption and the difference line, coloured.

Illustrative figures — not anybody’s real plan.

What you see under a year

  • The headline rate, with the difference line ending — too early to read as a verdict.
  • The Return against your plan reading with its band word but no colour, and a sentence ending “very early, and a rate annualised from this little will move a lot”.
  • Under How this return was worked out, a note that the record is short and the figure is likely to move a great deal.
  • On the type and market cards, under a year where the XIRR would be.
  • On the Overview’s Investment Performance strip, a line saying the return is based on too few days to read much into.

Other reasons something is uncoloured

  • Not readable yet — the reading has nothing to read, such as no listed holdings or under six months of contributions. It is never coloured.
  • A dash instead of a rate — nothing is priced, or no rate can be solved from the flows.
  • Between one and three years, the reading is coloured but its sentence adds that it is early.

Your plan at your actual return waits longer — three years, and at least half of what you hold priced daily — because it re-runs your whole plan on that rate. Action Items about returning less than your plan also wait until the return has a year behind it.
