How do I enter a bonus or variable income?

Use the Bonus / variable pay row for a yearly bonus, entered as the amount you can reasonably count on. A one-off windfall such as a share sale goes under Money coming in instead.

Every plan has a row called Bonus / variable pay, set to Annual. Enter the bonus you can reasonably count on in a typical year — not your best year. It grows at your income growth rate and stops when your salary stops.

  1. Open Income. The bonus row is in the group under Salary and regular pay — Spouse, partner or bonus income, or Bonus or variable pay in your own view once you have a partner.
  2. Enter the yearly amount, before tax.
  3. Leave How often on Annual, or switch to Monthly if it is paid monthly.

Choosing the figure

  • Look at the last three to five years and take a figure near the lower end. A plan that needs your best bonus every year is fragile.
  • If part of your pay is fixed by contract and part is not, put the fixed part in your salary and only the uncertain part here.
  • Commission or freelance work that varies month to month: enter a typical year’s total under Other income, with Annual frequency.
