What does "Use typical" do?

It fills an empty box with a typical figure for your market — only when you press it. The figure is marked as ours, not yours, so you can check it against what you actually pay.

Use typical puts a typical figure into an empty box, and nothing more. Nivritee never pre-fills a box with an estimate: the suggestion is shown beside the empty box, and taking it is something you do on purpose. In a spending breakdown and on a deposit’s rate, a figure you took is then marked as having come from our typical range, so it is never mistaken for one you gave.

Where you will see it

WhereWhat it fills in
A line in a spending breakdownThe midpoint of the typical range for that line — Use typical — followed by the amount.
The same line, for after you moveUse typical there — a figure for the place you will settle, once you have told us what kind of place it is.
A deposit’s RateUse typical, with the range for that country and type of deposit.
The running costs of a home you will live inThe middle of the typical range for a home of its value.

Where the figures come from

  • Most spending ranges are derived rather than surveyed: property costs as a share of your own home’s value, discretionary lines as a share of what you already spend, and everyday lines from a baseline for your country and the size of city you live in. Open Where this range comes from under a line to read its basis — it says so when a range is a reasoned starting point rather than a survey figure.
  • Deposit ranges are derived from the market’s own inflation or fixed-income assumption, and say they are not your bank’s rate.
  • Where Nivritee has no sensible figure, there is no button, and the line says to put in whatever you actually pay.

When to use it

Use it to fill a line you genuinely cannot look up, so the plan is not missing a cost. Replace it with your own figure when you can. A typical figure is somebody else’s life; your statement is yours.

In a breakdown or on a deposit, a taken figure says so afterwards: This came from our typical range, not from you. In a breakdown, typing over the box makes it yours and the note disappears; on a deposit, typing your own rate does the same.

See this in your own plan.
