How do I plan a move to another country?

Choose where you will settle, then say where you earn and spend today and when you will move. Each income, cost and loan can then say which country it belongs to and when it starts or stops.

Answer two questions under Your Location, then tell each row where it belongs. The first question is where you will settle. The second, Where do you earn and spend today?, can be any country — including one Nivritee does not plan for, such as the UAE. When the two differ, a third question appears: When will you move to the country you chose.

  1. Choose the country you will be living in once you are financially independent.
  2. Under Where you earn and spend today, pick the country you live in now.
  3. Answer When will you move to … with When I stop working, At an age (then enter Your age when you move), or I already live there.
  4. Go through Income, Living expenses and Liabilities. Open Where & when on each row that belongs to one country only, and set its country and when it starts or ends.
  5. Press Re-generate my plan.

Each row inflates at its own country’s rates and converts once, at today’s rate, before anything is computed. A row with no rate stays in its own units and says so.

The illustrative household’s two countries, the move question, and each row with its own place, start, end and currency, converted into INR.

  • Where you earn and spend today: United Arab Emirates. New rows start here.
  • Where you will be living: India. It fixes the plan’s currency, rates and schemes.
  • When will you move to India? When I stop working, at 55.
  • Rent in Dubai ends at the move; Living in Pune starts at it.

What the home country decides

Where you earn and spend today decides only two things: new income and expense rows start in that country and its currency, and today’s spending is judged against that country’s benchmarks. It never changes a figure you have already entered.

Costs that change when you move

Once a move is set, Living expenses shows a note: You will be spending in a different country. Nivritee converts currencies, but it does not guess a cost of living it has not been told. For anything that will cost differently after the move — rent above all — press Changes later? on that row and enter what it will cost there, in your plan’s currency and today’s money.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing an age that is not ahead of you. The app answers: That age is not ahead of you — if you have already moved, say where you live now instead.
  • Converting today’s costs and assuming they hold after the move. Prices differ between countries; set the later figure yourself.
  • Leaving a foreign salary in the plan’s currency by mistake. Check the currency code on the money box.

See this in your own plan.
