Why each part of the plan is asked, and how to get every figure right — countries, ages, savings, loans, income, spending and goals.
25 questions
- Why does the country I settle in matter so much? The country you will live in once you are independent sets your plan’s currency, all six rates and the savings schemes it asks about. Choosing the wrong one is the biggest source of a wrong answer.
- How do I plan a move to another country?Choose where you will settle, then say where you earn and spend today and when you will move. Each income, cost and loan can then say which country it belongs to and when it starts or stops.
- What age should I plan to?Plan past the age you expect to live to. Running out of money is the expensive mistake, so Plan until age should sit above average life expectancy, not at it.
- How do I choose the age I stop working?Enter the age you would like to stop earning a salary, generate the plan, then let the verdict and the projected independence age tell you whether that age holds up.
- Should I change the six assumptions?By countryUsually not at first. They are your country’s figures with a stated basis for each. Change one when you have a specific reason to disagree with it — and only that one.
- What investment return should I assume?Nobody can tell you, and Nivritee does not try. The two returns are assumptions. Start from the country default, then test the plan on a lower figure before you rely on it.
- How do I enter my cash and bank deposits?Enter one figure for all your cash, or break it down by account: type, bank, rate, balance and as-of date. It counts toward your corpus, except money you mark as your emergency fund.
- How do I mark my emergency fund, and what does it change?Tick Emergency fund on the account that holds it. That money leaves your independence corpus and fills the Freedom Ladder’s Survival rung instead, so it is never counted twice.
- How do I add a stock, ETF or mutual fund?Press + Add a holding, choose the kind of investment and where it is listed, search for it, and enter the units and the price you paid. It is then priced every weekday from the exchange’s close.
- How do I add a monthly SIP or regular investment?Open the holding’s Lots & edits, choose A regular SIP, and enter how much, how often and when it started. Nivritee fills in each instalment up to today, priced at that day’s close.
- What goes in the market investments box if I have listed holdings?Only what you have not listed. The Not listed figure means the rest of your shares, funds and bonds; Nivritee counts listed and not listed together, and tells you when both hold money.
- How do I enter my pension or retirement scheme balances?By countryEnter today’s balance of each scheme you hold in the schemes block under Investments. The rows offered depend on the country you settle in; a pension paid as income goes under Income instead.
- How do I enter gold and jewellery?Physical gold, silver, coins and jewellery you would count as savings go under Metals & jewellery. Gold ETFs and Sovereign Gold Bonds are market investments and belong in the listed holdings table.
- Why is my home not counted toward independence? You have to live somewhere, so the home you live in cannot also pay for your groceries. It is recorded for net worth; investment or rental property is counted toward your corpus.
- How do I enter a loan?Under Liabilities, add each loan you are still paying with what is outstanding today, the payment, how often and the years left. Nivritee reads the interest rate from those figures.
- Why do you ask for income before tax?Tax rules differ so much between countries that a wrong tax model would be worse than none, so Nivritee does not model tax. Enter pre-tax income, or your take-home pay for a more cautious view.
- How do I enter a bonus or variable income?Use the Bonus / variable pay row for a yearly bonus, entered as the amount you can reasonably count on. A one-off windfall such as a share sale goes under Money coming in instead.
- How do I work out what I spend?Enter what you spend today, category by category, from your statements. Nivritee works out what the same life costs later, each category at its own inflation rate.
- What does "Use typical" do?It fills an empty box with a typical figure for your market — only when you press it. The figure is marked as ours, not yours, so you can check it against what you actually pay.
- How do I break a spending category down into lines? From Action Items, press Break this down on a spending item, fill in each line monthly or yearly, and press Save breakdown. The category’s figure becomes the sum of your lines.
- How do I say when an income or cost starts or stops?Open Where & when on the row and choose when it starts and ends: now, when you move, when you stop working, at an age, or (with a partner) at their milestones. Loans have their own Paid off choice.
- How do I enter money held in another currency?Type the figure in the currency you hold it in and pick that currency on the money box. Nivritee converts it into your plan’s currency at today’s published rate before anything is worked out.
- How do I add a life goal?Under Life goals, add each one-off cost ahead of you with its type, the year it happens and what it would cost today. Nivritee carries it forward to that year at the right inflation rate.
- How do I enter an inheritance or other money coming in?Under Life goals → Money coming in, add each one-off amount you expect: what it is, its kind, its value today and when it arrives. It joins your savings in that year.
- How do I split a shared cost or asset with my partner?Enter the full amount once, tick Shared between you (or Owned by you) and your partner, and choose who pays or owns more. Nivritee works out each person’s part.
