How do I enter money held in another currency?

Type the figure in the currency you hold it in and pick that currency on the money box. Nivritee converts it into your plan’s currency at today’s published rate before anything is worked out.

Enter it as you hold it. Every money box that feeds the projection shows a currency code with a caret on its edge — that is a picker. Choose the currency the money is actually in and type the figure as your statement shows it. Nivritee converts it into your plan’s currency at today’s published rate every time a figure is worked out, and shows the equivalent beneath the box.

Changing the currency of a figure you already typed

If the box already holds a figure, changing its currency asks you what you meant, because the difference is the whole point: You’ve changed this from one currency to another. Choose one of the two options:

  • I meant the new currency — the same digits, now read in the new currency.
  • The same money — the figure converted at today’s rate, so its value does not change.
  • Or Leave it in the old currency to cancel.

A box holding zero just changes, with no question.

Each row inflates at its own country’s rates and converts once, at today’s rate, before anything is computed. A row with no rate stays in its own units and says so.

The illustrative household’s rows, each typed in its own currency and shown in INR.

  • Salary: AED 30,000 a month, about ₹6.81L in the plan.
  • S&P 500 ETF: $27,000, about ₹22.52L.
  • Home loan in INR, unchanged.

Illustrative figures — not anybody’s real plan.

Special cases

  • Listed holdings take the currency of their listing; you do not pick it.
  • Loans have one currency: the payment follows the outstanding balance.
  • A currency with no rate stays in its own units, and the screen says so, rather than being dropped.
  • Costs in another country can also be given that country in their Where & when. In one of the eleven countries Nivritee plans for, they then rise at that country’s rates; anywhere else, they follow your plan’s rates.

After you change the country you settle in

Figures entered earlier keep the currency you typed them in, so their meaning never changes underneath you. Your Location then lists them under a heading such as 3 rows are in another currency, with one button to Convert all of them into your plan’s currency, a picker on each row, and Put them back if you change your mind. Leaving them as they are is also fine.

See this in your own plan.
