What can Niv do?

Niv explains your plan, runs what-ifs and stress tests on your real projection, and offers one-press changes to your ages and assumptions. She never calculates by herself and never changes your plan.

Niv is the planner inside the app — the panel headed Nivritee, with Niv beside it and "Your financial independence planner" underneath. She can see what you have entered, explain what a figure means, and answer "what if" by running your actual projection. On a wide screen her panel is always beside your plan; on a narrower one, press Ask Niv in the corner to open it.

What she does

  • Runs a what-if. She re-runs your whole projection with something changed — the age you stop working, your planning age, any of the six rates, or spending less each month to save more — and tells you what it does. Under her answer a line such as "Ran a what-if: …" shows what she ran.
  • Stress-tests your plan through one of the product's stress scenarios, such as a 2008-style crash or a sustained inflation shock, shown as "Stress-tested: …".
  • Offers a change you can apply to one of your ages or one of the six assumptions, as a button you press yourself.
  • Notes what will still matter — a goal, a constraint, a decision — so she remembers it next time. You can read and delete every note.
  • Explains your figures, the sections, statutory schemes such as EPF, CPF, a 401(k) or KiwiSaver, and how financial independence planning works.
  • Points you to a help article. When an article in this Help Centre explains something better or in more depth, she may end her answer with one link to it, which opens in a new tab.

Nivritee — call me Niv

What if I stopped working at 52 instead?

Then it does not hold — your savings would run out at 81 rather than lasting to 90. Your first year without a salary would be 2040, when Higher education — Child 2 falls due, so you would draw 22.9% of your savings that year against 3.5% on your plan as it stands. That is the difference between Workable and Short.

Ran a what-if · independence age 52

A what-if as the site draws it: asked about stopping work at 52, Niv answers from a re-run projection, and the line beneath names the what-if she ran.

  • The figures in her answer come from the projection she ran, not from her own arithmetic.

Illustrative figures — not anybody’s real plan.

What she will not do

  • Calculate anything herself. Every figure she quotes comes from the projection engine. If she needs a number she does not have, she runs the engine for it or says she does not have it.
  • Change your plan. She can put a button in front of you; only you can press it.
  • Pick investments. She does not name stocks or funds to buy.
  • Give tax-filing, tax-structuring or legal advice, or talk about things outside personal finance and economics. She declines in one sentence and offers the nearest thing she can help with.

Her answers are short by design — usually two to four sentences — because her panel sits beside a form you are filling in. Ask her to explain in detail and she will go further.

Elsewhere in the app

When you open a section she may make one short remark about it, and she stops volunteering after three remarks nobody has answered. On the Retirement Tracker, Freedom Ladder and Investment Performance pages she writes a brief reading of the figures already on the page — she never adds a figure of her own there.

See this in your own plan.
